Locomotives and Carriages
We own a number of historic steam locomotives and railway carriages which have all been rescued and restored by the Trust over the years. Some are in working order and some are on static display. Take a look below to find out more.

6233 Duchess of Sutherland
This Princess Coronation Class locomotive was built at Crewe in 1938 and worked express passenger services for the London, Midland & Scottish Railway. After being withdrawn from service in 1964 it was displayed in a Butlin’s holiday camp until eventually being acquired by the Trust, restored with a Heritage Lottery Fund grant and steamed again in 2001. The Duchess is regularly used to operate train trips on the national rail network.

Royal/ Special Saloon 45000
This Saloon was built in 1920 by the London & North Western Railway Company and was used during its working life (up to 1989) by members of the Royal Family and other VIP’s. Saloon 45000 is believed to have been one of the carriages in Winston Churchill’s special ‘D-Day planning train’ in 1944. It has been restored by our volunteers over a number of years.

Ex-Butlin’s Miniature Locomotives
Our two 21-inch gauge locomotives were built in 1938 and ran in various Butlin’s seaside holiday camps until the 1960s. After being saved from a scrap yard and restored by our volunteers, they now occasionally run on a track outside the West Shed (this is for demonstration only – unfortunately rides are not available to the general public).

It is now restored to its 1930’s London, Midland & Scottish Railway livery and occasionally runs during special events. It is also available for hire to run on the national rail network – please get in touch for details.
